“There's a deliberate old-school vibe to Yana. He speaks in that slightly archaic way of classic Doctor Who - a bit gentlemanly, a bit out of his time, saying things like "So it would seem". Even when he becomes the Master, he uses that old classic, "My dear" - a phrase that we'd banned from the modern-day Doctor, because it sounds so wonderfully Pertwee. But suddenly here was a character who fitted the phrase.”
Russell explains about the anagram of Mister Saxon being Master No Six: "Complete coincidence - I swear. I had no idea. Weird, isn't it? I might have taken credit for it, or even the blame, but I was lying. I never even noticed, which is strange since the Master, throughout his incarnations, has had a predilection for anagrams. I only chose the name Saxon cos I wanted something British and slightly right-wing. Back in the mid-1990's, I developed an unmade soap opera for Granada called Saxon House, so it was one of my "pet" names." And the voice snippets of past-Masters? "It was only when I was writing the ADR (Additional Dialogue Recording) which is very last stage of production. The voices aren't that strong in the mix, cos sadly a lot of the dialogue does sound like an old telly track, but Delgado shouting at Azal and an Ainley chuckle are in there somewhere."
Chantho
"Bless her. What can I say?! Chan love her tho. And incidentally, her spine showing through her coat which we wanted to have was too expensive in the end!"
RTD on:
The Master Regeneration
"Utopia had to be very low on FX shots - a couple of digital matt paintings for the city, and a 2D rocket instead of a 3D one - to save money just for this sequence. The Mill gives us little presents sometimes , and that shot of John Simm with the glowing eyes after the Doctor's seen the tardis windows glowing was added on at the very last minute as a gift. So last minute in fact that Murray Gold's copy didn't include it - so all his music cues were a couple of secnds out afterwards and had to be rearranged! there's no such thing as a free FX shot!"
